A trip to Croatia with CICERO

Earlier this year, Grønt Marked was chosen as one of five farmers markets to take part in the CICERO project (Citizens & Communities for European Right to quality and local Food). A new, multi-country initiative funded by the EU, the aim is to promote local, sustainable food markets while supporting people in making more conscious decisions about what they eat.

As part of the project, each of the five participating farmers markets – made up of groups from Croatia, Italy, Poland, the Netherlands, and Denmark – will have their turn to host, with the aim being to promote their markets, share knowledge, and connect with like-minded people.

The inaugural meet, titled The Contribution of Food Markets to Public Health and Local Food Production Development, took place at the end of October, with the Croatian Farmers Market (also known as udruga hrvatskih tržnica) welcoming us to Osijek, Croatia. Here, our hosts took us on a tour of the city, fed us wonderful traditional food, shared their best practices, and showed us all the great local produce on offer – think endless jars of ajvar and honey, and vibrantly-coloured displays of fruit and vegetables.

From October 24-26, the Grønt Marked team had a great time exploring Osijek, bonding with our fellow participants and discussing everything from the way each farmers market operates, to what it takes to be a milk sommelier (hint: you need to drink a lot of milk).

Over the course of our three-day visit, our itinerary also included a workshop on plant-based smoothies, a series of talks on food systems and sustainable agriculture, a walking tour of Osijek city centre, and a visit to an organic farm.

In-between our scheduled activities and making new connections, the trip also offered each individual group the chance to bond.

Grønt Marked continues to grow with every season, and that means new volunteers, new board members (every few years) and new producers. With that in mind, it’s difficult to get to know everyone involved, so every opportunity to step outside of our comfort zones and spend a few days with each other helps further strengthen the mission of our market, and many others like it.

Stay tuned for more CICERO events in 2025.
